Settlement Reached in Watergate Facility Transfer of Ownership

The Town of Lexington and Blue Granite Water Company have reached a settlement to transfer ownership of the Watergate wastewater treatment facility that services approximately 1,100 customers in the Old Chapin Road area.

“This is part of the Town of Lexington’s plans to make substantial investments in sewer infrastructure rehabilitation and improvements,” said Steve MacDougall, Town of Lexington’s Mayor.

By agreement, the transfer is being accomplished pursuant to the Town’s exercise of its eminent domain authority and is part of the long-standing regionalization plan stemming from the Clean Water Act of 1972.

“Working together, we have reached a solution that interconnects the decades-old system at Watergate with a regional system,” said Don Denton, President of Blue Granite Water. “We have appreciated the opportunity to serve the customers in the Old Chapin Road area and we believe this transfer will ensure long-term protection of the environment and natural waterways.”

Acquiring the Watergate system completes over two decades of work to eliminate small sewer treatment facilities and incorporate them into the Town’s regional system.

“The Town of Lexington is committed to ensuring sewage is treated properly,” added MacDougall. “The ability to interconnect with our regional wastewater treatment operations will allow us to continue providing reliable sewer service and exceptional customer service.”

The transfer of the Watergate facility, which will now be served directly by the Town of Lexington, is effective December 2.  Customers impacted will receive additional details directly from the Town.
