Adaptive Computerized Signalization System

What are adaptive signals?

Conventional signal systems use pre-programmed, daily signal timing schedules. Adaptive signal control technology adjusts the timing of red, yellow, and green lights to accommodate changing traffic patterns and ease traffic congestion.  It works by collecting current demand information, evaluating performance using system specific algorithms, and then implementing modifications based on the outcome of that evaluation in real time.

The Adaptive signals project started in 2015 and has been completed in multi phases.

  • Phase 1 was completed in 2018
  • Phase 3 was completed in 2020
  • Phase 2 was completed in 2022

All these systems together total 47 adaptive signals reaching along the major corridors in Lexington and into parts of West Columbia. The more signals that are adaptive the better they can work together to create more efficient traffic flow.

What are the cameras I see on the signals? Are they to catch speeding?

The cameras mounted on the signals are used for detection and monitoring traffic flow. It is the systems way of “seeing” the cars so that it can adapt accordingly and make sure the proper cycle is served to vehicles in the que.  They are not taking any still photos to catch speeders.

Benefits of Adaptive Signals:

  • Eliminates constraints on current signal operations and timing
  • Improves travel time
  • Operates signal "intelligently"
  • Reduces accidents
  • Reduces fuel consumption and emissions

Municipal Achievement Award for its Adaptive Signalization System

The Town of Lexington received a Municipal Achievement Award for its Adaptive Signalization System which uses innovative technology to improve traffic flow and decrease travel time.

The award recognizes superior performance and innovative programs that lead to an improved quality of life for residents.

The system has successfully cut travel time nearly in half for portions of Highway 378. Soon, the system will be applied to all of the Town’s traffic signals, which will make Lexington the first municipality in the state to have this complete integration.

The project was in partnership with both public and private entities. To read more about how it works and more about the award visit the website: https://www.masc.sc/Pages/municipalities/achievement-awards/20-Lexington.aspx
