VIPs who assisted with the Fall Festival in October

The Lexington Police Department has implemented a program for alumni of its Citizen's Academy. It's called Volunteers in Policing (or VIPs) and it is a chance for Citizen's Academy alumni to volunteer their time and talents to help the Department and the Town of Lexington community. In putting the VIPs program together, there were three main reasons driving the process:

1) VIPs members provide extra manpower for when somebody is needed but it isn't a law enforcement activity that requires police powers of arrest.
2) VIPs members can provide the Department with direct feedback from the community and help the command staff identify problems or issues that need to be addressed early on.
3) VIPs members provide the community with an "insider's view" of the Department and can honestly answer questions or concerns their friends and family may have about how the police in Lexington do things.

To get an idea of how valuable the additional manpower can be, take a look at the list of events/functions found below where VIPs members have already helped or will be helping:

FunFest 5K Race
FunFest Parade
LPD Booth at FunFest
Annual LPD Fall Festival in October
Carolina Wildlife 5K Race
Veteran's Day Parade
Christmas Parade
Martin Luther King Jr Parade
Souper Bowl Race Against Hunger
Kids In Court Program
Recruitment/Career Days
Child Safety Seat Checks
Concerts in the Park

IIf you are interested in participating in the VIPs program as a volunteer, you will need to first complete the Department's Citizen's Academy, with the next Academy being offered in the Spring of 2008. Alumni of the Department's Citizen's Academy who are interested should contact Cpl. Doug Lee at (803) 359-6260 or dlee1@lexsc.com.
