The Lexington Police Department has emphasized continuity in the school resource officer program, having had only three officers serve as SRO in the program's six year existence. While a school resource officer is a full time law enforcement officer, a school resource officer is also expected to be a resource to students, parents, school personnel (including district staff), and the community. Under this community oriented policing approach, a school resource officer also serves as a role model for students, who will see the officer during the school day and at school functions (sporting events, dances, etc.). Because of the frequent contact with students, a school resource officer attempts to be proactive in identifying students who may need special counseling or services if they are to avoid an experience with the criminal justice system. This is not to say that school resource officers do not interact with "good" kids. In fact, the SRO at Lexington Middle School teaches individual classes for all students. These classes cover:
- Stress management/conflict resolution
- Alcohol and tobacco use / substance abuse
- Searches and seizures
- Personal protection
- Gangs
- The Bill of Rights
The mission statement of the Lexington Police Department's school resource officer best sums up what citizens can expect:
The mission of the SRO at Lexington Middle School is to work with the district, principals and teachers in providing the safest possible learning environment where students can concentrate on their education. The SRO will always conduct himself in the highest professional manner and provide a positive role model for students and parents alike. The SRO is committed to serve the needs of students, educators and the surrounding community and will strive for improvement in every facet of the position.
