What is a Reserve Officer?
A sworn unpaid officer with the power of arrest when on duty and in proximate contact with a full time officer.

Purpose of the Reserve Officer Program

  • Provide members of the community with the opportunity to work in law enforcement
  • Establish a stronger relationship with the neighborhood a reserve officer lives in
  • Provide additional manpower to the department at no (little) cost
     

General Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • No Criminal Record
  • Valid South Carolina Driver’s License
  • Physical Fitness Qualification
  • Completion of a 131 hour training course prescribed by the South Carolina CJA
  • Successfully pass comprehensive exam administered by the SC CJA


Field Training / Annual Training
All reserve officers complete the Department’s 500+ hour FTO program
Reserves receive annual training in Emergency Vehicle Operations,Defensive Tactics/Weapon Retention, Use of Force/OC Spray/TASER, Tactical Traffic Stops/Building Clearing, Legal Updates
Tactical Firearms and Qualification and First Aid

Duty Requirements
State law requires 20 hours/month or 60 hours/quarter
Reserve officer chooses when he/she will be on duty and for how long he/she will be on duty     

Examples of duty would include

  • Street patrol
  • Parades and road races
  • Neighborhood meetings
  • Community events
  • Court appearances
