Mayors Message August 2017

Mayor Steve MacDougall

The Town of Lexington will be part of history when the Total Solar Eclipse happens in the sky on Monday, August 21, 2017 at 2:41pm. To honor this scientific moment, the Town will host Eclipse Fest at the Icehouse Amphitheater, starting at 12pm.

This FREE event features music by Kenny George Band, Josh Roberts & The Hinges and Sweet Sweet. There will be an intermission to allow guests to view the Total Solar Eclipse, whose direct path is above Lexington. Limited protective eyewear will be available for the occasion.

A Total Solar Eclipse is when the sun will disappear behind the moon, turning daylight into twilight, with temperatures dropping rapidly and revealing massive streamers of light streaking through the sky around the silhouette of the moon. The moon orbits an average of 239,000 miles from Earth - however, the sun and moon line up only about once every 18 months.

The Great American Total Solar Eclipse will darken skies all the way from Oregon to South Carolina, along a stretch of land about 70 miles wide. The Town of Lexington is fortunate to be part of the “path of totality”, which is sure to create an unforgettable experience for our residents and welcomed guests.

REMEMBER: Looking directly at the sun, even when it is partially covered by the moon, can cause serious eye damage or blindness. NEVER look at a partial solar eclipse without proper eye protection.

We hope you can join us for Eclipse Fest and enjoy this historic moment at our Icehouse Amphitheater, winner of the 2017 Municipal Association of South Carolina Achievement Award.
