Council, staff and I are dedicated to alleviating traffic congestion.
Our long awaited Downtown Improvements, which includes the transition to a one-way pair traffic pattern along Lake Drive and Church Street, began construction in October 2017 and was implemented just last month. This is the first traffic and tourism project funded by the 2% Hospitality Tax.
The one-way project begins with intersection improvements that will split traffic at North Lake Drive and Church Street and extends to Maiden Lane where traffic joins back together. The Lake Drive lanes will head northbound, while the Church Street lanes will flow southbound.
By pairing the Lake Drive and Church Street corridor, the capacity is doubled. The additional capacity will allow a 40 percent increase in the amount of green signal time that is allotted to the Main Street traffic flow.
Additionally, the Town opened a 150 space parking lot along South Church Street to serve the Lexington Municipal Complex, Palmetto Collegiate Institute, Virginia Hylton Park and the Icehouse Amphitheater.
